The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum

Background and statement of mission

In 1994 it was planned how to make the concept "ecomuseum - a museum without walls" into a vital fulcrum for marketing, product development and presentation of the Lake District of Central Jutland.

The project group made study-visits to several museums and the Swedish Naturum. The main inspiration came from the Swedish Ecomuseum Bergslagen to which several visits were paid. In 1998 several visits to French ecomuseums were also paid.

From 1994-96 the layout for signs and information boards were developed with cooperation from the Freshwater Museum and Ry District Council.

Based on "The statement of mission by The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum" the district councils of Ry, Brædstrup and Skanderborg agreed to launch the project "The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum". A meeting to set up the project was called and 6 institutions joined. They were all represented on the first steering committee.

During the first phase, (1997-2000) The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum positioned information boards in relevant spots presenting interdisciplinary histories.

In the second phase (2000-2003) the positioning of information boards will continue as will the continued development of tour descriptions and visitor-centres. Little by little, a route marking based on the ecomuseum's themes will develop and "bind" the information boards together along a system of paths and roads.
