The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum

The reason for cooperation

During the first phase of establishing the ecomuseum most of the energy has been used in the area covered by the District Councils of Skanderborg, Brædstrup and Ry. Altogether the three councils cover an area of 496 square kilometres which is approximately 30% of the old Skanderborg County.

There is an important and beneficial contribution made to understanding and appreciating the landscape by the cooperation of existing museums, nature schools and other providers of experience. The collections and exhibitions that the institutions provide, give a picture of a part of the "whole". The institutions have to improve and renew the presentation of natural history and cultural history to the public, both on a qualitative and attractive level, by

  • cooperating in bringing projects to fruition
  • having a shared marketing
  • offering better possibilities for a school service.

When an ecomuseum is a joint venture between institutions it contributes a great deal to the usage and understanding of the landscape. The main target group becomes, naturally enough, the residents of the area who get a better understanding of their "local identity and history" through the efforts of the ecomuseum. When visitors and tourists also ask for the same activities and events that are available for the residents, the need for further product development becomes a necessity and the opportunities available get a higher profile.

The ecomuseum is a vehicle whereby the individual institutions can realize the projects jointly that they have long had on their "list of wants". A group action plan assembles a list of projects. At the same time, it provides the institutions with an opportunity to market a wider selection of offers and events than they would otherwise manage on their own.
