The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum

The monasteries

In this area four abbeys, Voer, Vissing, Ring and Øm are very central.
The Monastic period lasted for about 400 years - from the beginning of the 12th Century until the Reformation in 1536. Most of the region's land belonged to the abbeys along with the farms, woods and lakes. During the Reformation, King Christian 3rd expropriated the property of the monasteries and placed them in the domain of Skanderborg Castle.
